Athletics At CCDS

The Athletic Advantage

Building Skills, Teamwork, and Confidence Through Athletics In An Environment Where Everyone Gets Their Chance To Shine

Inclusive programs encourage students of all ages to stay active, work together, and discover their athletic potential.

At Canton Country Day School, athletics is an inclusive, year-round program designed to develop skill, sportsmanship, and joy in physical activity for every student. Beginning in early grades, children build foundational movement skills through Physical Education classes and intramural programs like volleyball, basketball, soccer, and “Cougars at Play” As students advance into middle school (grades 6–8), they have the opportunity to join co-ed soccer in the fall, boys’ and girls’ basketball in the winter, and co-ed track and field in the spring—each culminating in competitive tournaments or meets against fellow independent schools. Across all levels, CCDS encourages all interested students to participate, fostering competence, teamwork, and the confidence to recognize and optimize their full potential

“Whether in the gym, on the field, or at a meet, every child learns the value of dedication, teamwork, and Cougar spirit.”

Physical Education

At Canton Country Day, Physical Education is designed to grow with students as they develop coordination, fitness, and a love for movement. In the early learning years, children build foundational locomotor and non-locomotor skills through fun activities like relay races, balance games, obstacle courses, dance, stations, and ball skills. From kindergarten through third grade, students expand these abilities by participating in group games, fitness exercises, and lead-up games that introduce teamwork and sportsmanship while using a variety of equipment. By fourth through eighth grade, the program emphasizes team sports, group games, fitness, dance, and collaboration, with students gaining experience in volleyball, basketball, soccer, kickball, floor hockey, and outdoor games. Together, these experiences create a well-rounded foundation for lifelong health, teamwork, and confidence.

“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” – John F. Kennedy

Winter: Girls and Boys Basketball

CCDS fields both boys and girls basketball teams during the winter months from December until February, with practices beginning in November. Students learn sportsmanship, discipline and perseverance while developing their skills on the court. The season includes a culminating tournament against other independent schools.

“Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” – Vince Lombardi

Fall: Co-ed Soccer

CCDS students are encouraged to participate in a co-ed soccer team, in order to develop new skills and discover the joy of playing and competition while learning to function as a team. The CCDS season includes a 12-14 game schedule from August through October, including a culminating tournament against other independent schools.

"The team that keeps winning is not the most talented but the most hard-working. The waves of changes propel advancement. After making all the mistakes, every player has a chance to turn the outcome of the game around by making the right moves next.” – unknown

E-Sports

The Esports classes at CCDS combine a new pathway for students to experience science, technology, engineering and math with character education in an engaging way.
